Iptables-tutorial 1.2.1 released

It’s time again for a second release of the iptables-tutorial. This consists mostly of bug fixes, updated/improved images, and improved printable formats and rewritten introduction to the tutorial. A lot of work has been done to the print quality of the tutorial since I am planning a release of the tutorial in bookform. The current version is at a major print on demand site right now, and I have ordered a first copy for proofreading. Once this is done, I am planning version 1.2.2 to be released. This should be in 2-3 weeks, maximum. Once this is done, I will contact everyone who has signed an interest in the bookformat. I'm sorry for delaying this for such a long time, but now it is finally happening!

  2. Hi,
I love to read a copy of your book or any book that you can suggest about iptables, i am looking to secure an apache redhat webserver.

    Thank You!

  4. Hi David,

Sorry to say but due to the amount of problems I had with lulu when I started publishing the book (the copious amount of details that can be wrong according to a printer is staggering to say the least), I decided to put it all on hold, so there is no printed version at the moment. I will possibly revisit that subject at a later date, if nothing else it could be interesting for any future projects.

  6. Oskar, you keep talking about problems with formatting using Lulu, there is another way. My brother writes books and then places them in the PDF format and sells them that way. In this manner he does not have to jump through all the hassles the publishing company requires to publish through them. You might want to publish it this way then use Pay Pal or some other payment company to sell them yourself.

  8. Hi David!

I understand your sentiment to some degree. There was two parts to this problem for me, one part was that the PDF took a _lot_ of work maintaining, as in I’d get very strange errors from the document generators etc. The second part was that Lulu kept retracting the book format for all kinds of reasons. At some time I was also a bit … let’s just say tired of the whole tutorial and since I’m no longer really maintaining the document, I don’t feel like giving anyone the chance to actually pay me anything for it (it would feel wrong and that train has already passed imho).

  10. Oskar, I have noticed there are no new versions since 2006. That is six years ago. That means the valuable information in this tutorial is not being of any use at all to anyone. You put all that work into something that could be valuable to many like me. So something you might consider is going ahead and printing it in a PDF format and then placing it into public domain. At least that way it would not be languishing around with no values at all. You would at least know your hard work is being used by many of us out here who need it desperately.

    Thank you very much
    David

  12. Hi David!

It is already open for anyone to take over, and I’ve asked on several occasions in the past for someone to take the document over. All the source for the document is available http://www.frozentux.net/documents/iptables-tutorial/, specifically http://www.frozentux.net/iptables-tutorial/iptables-tutorial.src.tgz.

So, again, if anyone wants to take over the document and update it to current standards, you’re more than welcome, I’ll show anyone who wishes to do so how the build system works and answer any questions I can :). The basics is still the same, it’s just go through the changes during the last 6 years (not that many iptables revisions afaik) and any new tools and add one by one etc.

  14. Thank you for answering Oscar.
Let me encourage you to go farther in this endeavor. It seams that with LINUX finally catching on, something like this will be very sorely needed. You have a head start in this issue. I have found very little information on how to get started in using IPTABLES. Thanks for what you have done to this point and hang in there. If I can come up to speed with it, I would be willing to help, but right now I am just getting started in trying to understand it.

    Dave
